Posted by African Press International on October 17, 2006

Finally there is peace Sudan. The country is now offering scholarships and the first to benefit are Ugandan students who will travel to Sudan and take up their studies.

According to the New Vision of Uganda, “TEN Ugandans are the lucky winners of a joint scholarship offered by the Sudanese government and the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.

The students, who will leave for the Northern Sudan capital Khartoum on October 22, will undertake undergraduate courses in Theology and sciences from the International University of Africa.”

For a country that has been in civil war for many years, peace is something to be cherished.

Kenyan teachers are also a group that has benefited by being employed and posted to teach in Southern Sudan.

Cooperation of this kind will enhance peace and understanding among the people in the region.

Whistle blowers to get asylum in United States!

Posted by African Press International on October 17, 2006

Three Kenyan whistle blowers who alerted authorities on corruption in Charterhouse, Nairobi – Kenya have travelled to the US, reports the Nation.

It is not always safe to be a whistle blower in a country where corruption is protected by people in high positions.

The three men who reported the matter to the finance ministry have now become asylum seekers in a bid to protect their lives and those of their families.

When Mr Githongo, a former Permanent Secretary and advisor to President Kibaki, became a whistle blower, forces in government made his life difficult. He had to leave the country and seek asylum in the UK in order to be safe. The ministers he pointed out as either corrupt or protectors of the corrupt have since resigned, a sign that Mr Githongo’s whistle was genuine.

A trend like this makes people fear to report corruption, because they know that they have to live in fear after revealing what they know.

Seeking asylum in other countries in this manner, and for the reasons above, is very cruel and forces those who do not wish to become refugees to keep quiet even when they could have saved the tax payers money from corrupt individuals.
