Two days ago, foreign minister Tuju of Kenya announced the appointment of former president Daniel Arap Moi as a government peace envoy.
Now questions are being raised as to why a cabinet minister was the one to announce the appointment instead of president Kibaki himself.
The foreign minister has admitted making a mistake because he has no powers to appoint the former president as an envoy.
If President Kibaki wants to appoint the former president to this “noble duty” he is the one with powers to announce the appointment as it is done in many countries.
When President Bush appointment former president Clinton to be his special envoy, he took the time to make the announcement in the white house.
Tuju’s appointment was announced in manner that can be characterised as a “roadside” job offer.
Now Tuju has tried his best to come clean by explaining that he has no power to make such announcement. Was he excited when he discovered that President Kibaki was planning to appoint Moi and went ahead to make the announcement in order to be in record as the man who gave the job to the former president?
