Police on Wednesday night shot dead a man who kidnapped and raped a University of Nairobi student at Makaburini near Railways Golf Club in Nairobi.
The police said they found the man raping the student, shortly after her boyfriend reported her kidnap by people who were asking for a Sh4 million ransom.
Nairobi Central OCPD Paul Wanjama said the student was kidnapped at around 6.30 pm as she walked home from the university.
“She had been with her boyfriend and a few minutes after they bid each other goodbye near the golf course; three people took the girl away and called the boyfriend asking him to send Sh4 million for them to release her.
“The boyfriend told the kidnappers that he could not raise such an amount because he was only a student. After negotiations, they settled at Sh10,000, which the boyfriend said he would send in a few minutes, but instead reported the incident to Parliament Police Station,” Mr Wanjama said.
SEARCH FOR KIDNAPPERS
He said police were then mobilised to search for the kidnappers.
“When police arrived, the lady had been raped several times and one of the kidnappers was even found in the act.
“On realising that they had been found, the suspect drew a machete and tried to attack the police officers and he was shot,” Mr Wanjama said.
He said another suspect escaped into a nearby thicket, with bullet injuries.
The 20-year-old student was taken to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital where she is receiving treatment and post-rape care
