SRSG Djinnit meets with President Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire

DAKAR, Senegal, June 4, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa, Mr. Said Djinnit, met today in Abidjan with the President of Cote d’Ivoire, Mr. Alassane Ouattara.

Mr. Ouattara and Mr. Djinnit discussed the situation in West Africa and the various challenges to the security and stability in the region.

SRSG Djinnit informed the President that he will be undertaking this afternoon his second visit to Nigeria as High Representative of the Secretary General following the abduction of the school girls in Chibok. He expressed concern at the prevailing insecurity in North-Eastern Nigeria as a result of the terrorist acts perpetrated by Boko Haram and reiterated the United Nations commitment to the stability of Nigeria and the consolidation of its democracy.

Echoing the extraordinary ECOWAS Summit meeting which was held recently in Accra, the President and the Special Representative stressed the need for regional coordination to fight terrorism.

The President and the Special Representative w elcomed the peaceful elections in Guinea-Bissau and called for interna! tional support to the newly elected authorities, the Government and people of Guinea-Bissau. The Special Representative seized the opportunity to commend ECOWAS and its leaders for their support to the transition process in Guinea-Bissau.
