The son of Brazilian soccer legend Pele has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for money laundering which police believe originated from the drugs trade, according to international media.
Edson Cholbi do Nascimento ( 43), better known by the nickname Edinho , was formerly keeper of his famous father’s old club Santos in the 1990s .
Friday local time he received the devastating judgment of the Brazilian coastal city of Praia Grande . It all started in 2005 when he was arrested for money laundering and drug crime in the so-called ” Operation Indra .” However, he was released in December 2006.
43 -year-old , according to the BBC, acknowledged that he uses drugs, but denies the serious allegations he is convicted for – money laundering.
Brazilian media has been unable to reach him for direct comment. The media, however believe that he will appeal the conviction.
It is not the first time Cholbi Edson do Nascimento has been charged. At the age of 29, in 1999 he was sentenced to six years in prison along with another person for having killed a man during a street race in 1992.
His popular father Pelé is now 73 years old. He retired at 33, from his football career after scoring 1284 goals. He put Brazil on the map by becoming champions three times.
Edinho is Pele’s third son from his first marriage.
