Germain Katanga found guilty of four counts of war crimes and one count of crime against humanity committed in Ituri, DRC

Case: The Prosecutor v. Germain Katanga

Today, 7 March 2014, Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (ICC), ruling in the majority, with Judge Christine Van den Wyngaert dissenting, rendered its judgment in the case The Prosecutor v. Germain Katanga. The Chamber was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt of Germain Katanga’s guilt as an accessory, within the meaning of article 25(3)(d) of the ICC’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute, to one crime against humanity (murder) and four war crimes (murder, attacking a civilian population, destruction of property and pillaging) committed on 24 February 2003 during the attack on the village of Bogoro, in the Ituri district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Decisions on sentencing and victim reparations will be rendered later. The Prosecutor and the Defence may appeal the judgment within 30 days

Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice’s Travel to the United Arab Emirates and Djibouti

WASHINGTON, March 7, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice is traveling to the United Arab Emirates and Djibouti from March 6-8.

In the United Arab Emirates she is meeting with senior Emirati officials including Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed to discuss U.S.-UAE cooperation on a range of regional issues.

In Djibouti, she will meet with President Guelleh to discuss our strategic partnership and visit U.S. troops at the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa at Camp Lemonnier.

UNAMID concerned over violence in South Darfur, calls for unhindered access

EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, March 3, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ – The African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is deeply concerned over reports of an escalation in violence in South Darfur over the course of the past several days.

The violence has resulted in the reported burning of a number villages and the displacement of a large number of civilians in the vicinity of Um Gunya, located approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Nyala.

The Mission has received reports of looting, arson and civilian casualties, as well as the arrival of newly displaced populations into the Al Salam and Kalma camps for internally displaced persons.

Peacekeepers have attempted to access the affected areas on several occasions, but have been denied passage by the authorities.

UNAMID calls upon the authorities to allow the Mission unhindered and immediate access to these areas, so that it can carry out its core…
