Yesterday during the Twelfth Session of the Assembly of States Parties, Kenya got the amendments they wanted. This will now make it easy for President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities to the Kenyan people, who elected them into the highest office in the land, without inteference from the court demanding their continuous presence during the proceedings.
According to the President of the Assembly of States Parties Ambassador Tiina Intelmann, the ICC Judges are expected to interpret the amendments correctly and avoid misunderstanding during the Kenya cases and other future cases.
Asked whether she has confidence in Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and the ICC Judges, Ambassador Intelmann stated that she has confidence in her and the Judges, but that if any Member State was to complain about their conduct, she will not hesitate to take up the matter using the right channels as provided by the Rome Statute.
