Kenya : Tension looming in Kisumu – Police Officer injured ahead of ODM nominations tomorrow

Just a day to political parties’ nominations, there is fear that tension might engulf Kisumu City following the arrest of an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party aspirant alleged to have in possession crude weapons.

Seth Ochieng’ Kanga alias Adui is reportedly have purchased pangas and clubs to ferry to unknown destinations that police say was security threat as parties prepare to hold their primaries tomorrow.

Kanga who is eying the Milimani Market County Assembly Representative was arrested yesterday at around 7pm prompting his supporters to storm Kisumu Central Police Station demanding to know why their aspirant have been arrested.

The youth who waited for almost four hours became impatient and started becoming so rowdy immediately various aspiring aspirants from Kisumu County led by Ruth Odinga walked into the station to inquire arrest.

In restricting the youth from entering the station, police officers started to lobby tear gas canisters to disperse the rowdy supporters of Adui during the night incident.

At the point of the violence police officers are said to have started shooting at the crowd with a police officer from Traffic Department sustaining serious bullet wound on his leg after being shot by a colleague during the melee.

The officer is currently fighting for his life at Aga Khan Hospital where he was rushed last night. Another person was also reported to have been shot during the violence with politicians blaming police in fueling chaos without proper investigation.

Ruth Odinga who led Kisumu County aspirants said the arrest was politically motivated urging police to take law and order without taking sides that will lead to loss of lives in the city.

According to Police boss Musa Kongoli investigation are ongoing saying the suspect have been released on a cash bail. But as we going on air police were having no evidence to the matter.

Kongoli however assured the resident that security agents have been deployed in the city to curb any insecurity that might occur as parties prepare for nomination tomorrow.

Police officers don in anti riot gears are currently strategically positioned in the streets of Kisumu City and it vicinity.
