Posted by African Press International on August 5, 2008

The head of Spanish diplomacy, Miguel Angel Moratinos, on Monday revealed that the proposed tunnel mega-project between Morocco and Spain would be presented to the European Union (EU) in October.

This project of “great ambition” dubbed “liaison fixe” will be submitted by Rabat to Madrid on 13 October on the day of the preliminary meeting of the Morocco-EU association council, Martinos told a press briefing in Tangiers, north of Morocco, at the end of his meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Taib Fassi Fihri.

The Spanish diplomat termed as “priority” the project which will link Africa to Europe via Morocco and Spain.

This project, whose technical studies were carried out since 2006, is expected to link Tarifa in Spain to the region of Malabata, near Tangiers, through a 40-km tunnel with 28-km underwater stretch.

The initial budget is estimated at five billion Euros, according to corroborating sources.

The tunnel is billed to be operational by 2020.
