Kisumu – Kenya: Fire puts Jua-Kali artisans out of business

Posted by African Press International on September 20, 2007

Kisumus juakali artisans and other small traders woke up to a shocking news following the fire outbreak that swept across their sheds and food kiosks, leaving in its wake a trail of properties worth millions of shilling destroyed.

The inferno which took place along Kamas road off kisumu-Busia road rendered tens and thousands of businessmen jobless as they could not operate normally.

Not even the consecutive efforts of the Kisumu based fire brigade could stop the raging fire.

The massively vandalized properties was highly attributed to poor planning of the structures, hindering the bids of the contingents of fire brigade team to access the fire area which was spreading at an alarming speed, as the onlookers and the affected lot watched helplessly.

Police sources said that the cause of the fire is yet to be established. Though strong rumours were swirling over that food that was left overnight by one of the restaurants owner to boil, might be the course.
