China, Africa to hold consultations during UN General Assembly session

Beijing (China) China and the African members of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) are scheduled to hold political discussions in New York on the sidelines of the the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly from September 19 to 29, APA learnt on Tuesday from diplomatic sources.

The Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi is scheduled to attend this political consultation with foreign ministers of African member countries of the FOCAC on September 26.

According to Chinese sources, this meeting is due to focus on the implementation of achievements of the Beijing Summit last November, and the ways of promoting a new type of China-Africa strategic partnership as well as international and regional issues of common interest.

A proposal for a summit of the UN Security Council on African issues is also expected to be discussed on the sidelines of the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly.

China announced during the Beijing summit (November 3-5, 2006) that it will double aid to Africa by 2009, set up a $5 billion investment fund for the continent, provide $3 billion loans in the next three years and cancel some debts owed by Africas poorest nations.
