Rebel leader Nkunda vows to fight troops deployed to eartern DR Congo

Posted by African Press International on September 15, 2007

Goma (RDC) The former General in the Democratic Republic of Congo Army and chairman of the National congress for the defense of the people (CNDP) rebel group, Laurent Nkunda, said he was against the deployment of the mixed brigades from the Eastern Ituri province, arguing that they are rather troops of the Rwandan Liberation Defense Forces in the service of Kinshasa.

dr-congo-rebel.jpgIn a statement last Tuesday, Laurent Nkunda argued that such a troop deployment is not conducive to peace in a context of conflict.

According to him, such a move would push “certain tribes to become xenophobic against local ethnic groups, which could lead to a genocide in this part of the Congolese territory,” namely Masisi and Rutshuru.

MONUC (UN mission in Congo) has not approved the deployment of the Congolese troops, Laurent Nkunda further said.

The deposed General warned from his Bwiza headquarters that any military troops which would be deployed in Masisi, Bwito or Rutshuru will have to face his forces because, it is genocide against the Tutsi minority ethnic group, and the masterminds of this awful plan should be exposed in time.
