Posted by African Press International on March 29, 2007

Monrovia (Liberia)- The first French Naval Warship to visit Liberia since 1989, Thursday morning docked at the Free Port of Monrovia for a four-day visit, APA has learnt.

The warship, Lance Roquettes is serving with the French military mission in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

A source from the warship told APA that the visit is one of confidence-boosting as Liberia and France are poised to resume full diplomatic relations.

Liberia’s Vice President, Joseph N. Boakai Thursday met with the French Ambassador designate to Liberia, Jacques Gerard on board the vessel.

The two hour meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister George Wallace who is acting Chairman of the Cabinet while President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is out of the country, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Alan Doss, the deputy Force Commander of the UN Mission in Liberia, and the Captain of the French Warship Capitaine de Corvette Berthelot.

Briefing reporters following the meeting, Vice President Boakai said the fact that a French Naval Warship is visiting Liberia for the first time since 1989, is an expression of confidence in the country’s leadership.

Vice President Boakai said issues ranging from security to bilateral ties were discussed at the meeting.

The Ship which has a 100-member crew, is expected to leave the country Sunday.
