European skies for European planes

Posted by African Press International on March 10, 2007

Paris (France) The European Commission Friday pinned up several African airline companies it said were “not very reliable” and thus banned from flying the European airspace, APA learnt here Friday.

The concerned African airlines are registered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (52 airlines), Sierra Leone (8), Swaziland (7), Equatorial Guinea (6), Liberia (1), Rwanda (1) and Sudan (1).

European Union authorities in charge of air safety say they are particularly banning the companies because they operate within “conditions under the minimum safety levels.”

“It does automatically mean that an airline whose name is not on the Community list abides by the applicable safety requirements,” the European Commission said.

It however added, “If an Airline Company named on the list believes it is in conformity with the technical elements and requirements stipulated by the applicable international safety requirements, it can request the Commission to start the process for its removal from the list”.

Another list enumerates the airline companies whose functioning in Europe is authorised only under given conditions. Two African companies are on it : Air Services (Comoros) and Hewa Bora Airways (DRC).

The lists of airline companies “not abiding by the safety requirements” as regards air traffic are regularly updated and published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
