Fighting continued Tuesday in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between government forces and rebels of the deposed General Laurent Nkunda’s National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), UN sources has said.
Heavy fighting reportedly took place precisely in the area of Tongo, 60 km northwest of Goma, in the territory of Rutshuru in North Kivu province, where an operational base of the UN Mission in DRC (MONUC) was caught in the crossfire by belligerent forces.
The UN mission was therefore unable to fulfil its full mandate to protect civilians, the source said, adding that the government forces took control of the town of Tongo on Tuesday afternoon.
One hundred and twelve CNDP fighters were killed in the fighting since Sunday in Tongo, according to a provisional report presented Tuesday to the press by the Second in Command of the 8th Military Region, Colonel Delphin Kahimbi.
Fresh fighting was reported Tuesday in Nyanzale area where about 100,000 people have been displaced, according to humanitarian sources.
