Shooting Iraq war film starts in Mozambique

Maputo (Mozambique) Authorities in Mozambique have warned residents Maputo not to be disturbed by the sound of explosions and gunfire as the producers of a US mini-series on Iraq begin shooting the episodes of a war film in various locations of the Mozambican capital.

The team behind \”Generation Kill,” a seven-part series which will be aired by Home Box Office (HBO) TV in the US, are set to spend several weeks in Maputo, which still bears the scars of Mozambique\’s long-running civil war and is an increasingly popular film location.

\”We are informing people that there is no reason to be worried if they hear the sound of shootings or explosions in the city centre,\” the interior ministry said on Wednesday.

The series is based on a book by a young marine who served in Iraq and chronicles the first weeks of the US-led invasion in 2003.

The Mozambican capital has been used as a film location for a number of Hollywood productions in recent years, including last year\’s Leonardo di Caprio hit, \”Blood Diamonds,\” about the Sierra Leone diamonds-financed war and the 2001 boxing epic, \”Ali,\” starring Will Smith and chronicling the life of former world heavyweight Muhammad Ali.
