Kenya: Drama in Butere court

There was a drama in Butere court in a case which Mumias legislator Ben Washiali has been charged over incitement.
Lawyers representing the 5 accused protested to the presiding magistrate and stage a walk out over what they termed “lack of fairness”.
The case which had earlier been adjourned in 25th May 2009 during the first hearing was being heard this week 3rd July 2009 and all the five witnesses, and five accused persons were present.

Kofi Annan may want to continue babysitting the Kenyan leaders
Kofi Annan gave Kenya until the end of August to form a local tribunal to try the architects of the post-election violence that saw many people get killed, or face the consequences of the secret list being handed over to the International Criminal Court. Many politicians are against having a local tribunal and prefer to have the ICC do its job and give Kenya the justice it so much longs to have.
Many have stated that a local tribunal will be manipulated by leaders and there will be no justice. This is true in itself because many Kenyan leaders are known to buy their way in anything they so much want to get done.

KISUMU, – Demand for medical male circumcision has been rising in Kenya’s south-western Nyanza Province since it became available as part of a package of HIV prevention services in November 2008.
Although local communities do not traditionally practice male circumcision, intensive sensitization programmes by governmental and non-governmental organizations are boosting acceptability.

JOHANNESBURG, – In a landmark case in Namibia, 22 hotel workers are taking their employer and a doctor to court for allegedly testing them for HIV without their informed consent.
In February 2000, the owner of Oshakati Country Lodge in northern Namibia hired a doctor to conduct HIV tests on all the lodge’s employees. Those who asked about the nature of the test were told it was for general hygiene.

UGANDA: HIV-positive mums struggle to find safe food for their babies

GULU, – The rising cost of food in northern Uganda is forcing HIV-positive new mothers to turn to risky alternatives to formula milk or exclusive breastfeeding, as recommended by health professionals.
Despite the insecurity caused by a two-decade-long war in the north, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes in the region are reported as largely successful.
The Italian NGO, the Association of Volunteers in International Service (AVSI), says that in its programmes in the districts of Kitgum and Pader, HIV testing and counselling acceptance rate are above 90 percent; more women are also coming to health centres to deliver their babies.
